In December of 1990 we signed up for a bareboat sailing excursion organized by SAIL Magazine. We were on, The Nomad, a 42 foot Canadian Sailcraft. Since we did not have a pilot license,Captain Gary Brown was our skipper. In additon, Mike joined us to round out the crew.
Alisha, a photographer from SAIL came along to take pictures that was later used for a magazine article about the excursion. She sent her proofs around and let us pick some for prints. Most of the pictures in this trip are hers.
We flew into Marsh Harbor and from there we sailed around the Sea of Abaco, the area enclosed by the Abaco cays. It was like a large lake with a sandy bottom, no deeper than 20 feet at most. From Marsh Harbor, we sialed to Green Turtle Cay, Treasure Cay, Great Guana Cay, Man-o-War Cay. Elbow Cay (where Hopetown is located) then back to Marsh Harbor.
At each of the cays we went ashore to visit the small towns and/or went swimming. Each night a different boat in the flotilla hosted the get together where we ate, drank and got to know each other. There were 7 boats in the flotilla. Most where sloops in the 40 foot range. The largest was a 52 foot Irwin Ketch. For the first couple of days the wind was so strong we had to reef the mainsail (reduce its surface area) and not use the jib. Even then we could sail at he maxium hull speed which was about 7 knots.
